Hemsworth, Wade, 1916-2002 : Originally from Brantford, Ontario, songwriter and performer Wade Hemsworth began learning music at an early age by playing the guitar and the banjo. After hearing traditional Newfoundland songs during his years of service in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II, he developed a special interest in folk music. A talented artist, he also studied painting, earning a diploma from the Ontario College of Art in 1939. From 1952 to the late 1970s, he worked as a designer for companies such as Canadian National and Hydro Ontario. This work led him to travel frequently to wilderness areas of northern Canada. From these excursions he drew the inspiration for many of his songs including "The Black Fly Song" and "The Log Driver's Waltz", both used in the National Film Board (NFB) productions Log Drive (1959) and The Log Driver's Waltz (1978). Sisters Kate and Anna McGarrigle have performed the song "The Log Driver's Waltz". Hemsworth is the composer of a number of other hit songs including "The Wild Goose" and "The Shining Birch Tree". In 1955 with Folkways Records, he recorded his first album, Folk Songs of the Canadian North Woods. In 1995, at age 79, he produced a second album, The Songs of Wade Hemsworth. This album includes the 16 songs that make up the collection published by Penumbra Press in Waterloo, Ontario in 1990. Hemsworth's songs have been recorded by numerous well-known performers including Omar Blondahl, Chris Rawlings, the Travellers, the Couriers, Tom Kines and the McGarrigle sisters.
