In 1938, although her career as a performer and teacher was well established, she was forced to leave her country. She chose Canada as her new home, and specifically the city of Toronto, where she continued her musical activities with the same energy she had displayed in Austria and elsewhere in Europe. A talented teacher with a remarkably comprehensive education, she taught for many years at the Royal Conservatory of Music and the University of Toronto. Her students included composer R. Murray Schafer and harpsichordist Valerie Weeks. Kraus was also a distinguished performer, particularly in the Toronto Baroque Ensemble (a group she founded) and in duets with flautist Robert Aitken. As well, she performed in concert with a number of other celebrities including Lois Marshall and violinists David and Igor Oistrakh. Greta Kraus received the Toronto Arts Award in 1990 and the Order of Ontario in 1991.Additional information:Custodial history:Acquired from the Estate of Greta Kraus, in several acessions, between 1998 and 2001.Container note(s):1 : 1998-13
