Hewitt, Angela, 1958- : Originaire d'Ottawa (Ontario), la pianiste Angela Hewitt fait l'apprentissage du piano dès l'âge de trois ans auprès de sa mère, Marion Hewitt, professeur de musique au niveau secondaire. Douée d'un talent exceptionnel, elle donne son premier récital à 9 ans au Royal Conservatory of Music de Toronto, où elle poursuit sa formation auprès des pianistes Earle Moss et Myrtle Guerrero. Elle complète ses études musicales à l'Université d'Ottawa sous la direction de Jean-Paul Sévilla et obtient un baccalauréat en musique en 1976.
De 1975 à 1985, année où sa carrière internationale prend son envol, Hewitt accumule les premiers prix aux concours de musique. Elle remporte, entre autres, les prix du concours Bach de Washington, D.C. (1975) et de Leipzig (1976), du concours Schumann de Zwickau en Allemagne de l'Est (1977), du concours international Viotti de Vercelli en Italie (1978), du concours international Casadesus de Cleveland (1979), du concours Dino Ciani à la Scala de Milan (1980) et du Concours international Bach à Toronto (1985). Ce dernier prix s'accompagne d'un enregistrement en solo sur étiquette Deutsche Gramophon. Louangé par la critique, l'enregistrement lui vaut d'être reconnue comme l'une des plus grandes interprètes de Bach parmi les pianistes de sa génération. En 2005, à la demande du producteur britannique Hyperion, elle termine un projet d'enregistrement de toutes les grandes oeuvres pour clavier de Bach.
Hewitt s'intéresse également aux oeuvres d'autres compositeurs. Elle affectionne en particulier la musique de Couperin, de Beethoven, de Schumann, de Chabrier, de Granados, de Fauré, de Ravel, de Messiaen et d'Alexina Louie. Elle se produit avec les plus grands orchestres (l'Orchestre philharmonique de la BBC, le Royal Philharmonique de Londres, l'Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, le Cleveland Orchestra, l'Orchestre symphonique de Toronto, l'Orchestre philharmonique du Japon, l'Orchestre symphonique de San Francisco et les orchestres de l'Australian Broadcasting Corporation) et est l'invitée de prestigieux festivals (Édimbourg, Osaka, Prague, Hong Kong, etc.). En juillet 2005, elle lance son propre festival, le Trasimeno Music Festival, un événement annuel qui se tient à Magione, en Ombrie (Italie).
En 1995, l'Université d'Ottawa rend hommage à Angela Hewitt en lui décernant un doctorat honorifique. Elle reçoit l'Ordre du Canada en 2000 et le premier prix BBC Radio 3 Listener's Award en 2003.
