Series consists of aerial survey image holdings of the National Air Photo Library (NAPL). The bulk of this series consists of images obtained from aerial surveys initiated by the NAPL between 1925 and 1995. The surveys were conducted in order to obtain a complete coverage of aerial photography for the Canadian landscape, which was necessary to map the country. Many areas in Canada were photographed on numerous occasions. For these areas, the aerial photography collection provides a perspective of the changes that have occurred over time.

The NAPL's aerial survey collection also contains aerial photographs from other sources, primarily the Canadian military, which transferred the images to the NAPL for archival purposes.

Each image in the NAPL is assigned a unique index number determined by the series, roll number, and frame number of the image. For example, photo A23822-35 is the 35th photo on the 23822 roll in the A series. In each series, the roll numbers are assigned chronologically.

Unless noted otherwise, every aerial survey series held by the NAPL is linked to a collection of air photo index maps. These maps consist of a series of National Topographic System maps, upon which the flight line and photo centres for each roll of film have been documented. These maps allow users to search the air photo collection geographically.

This series also includes three item level descriptions for photographs of the Cliff Street Observatory, an 1883 air photograph of the Halifax Citadel, and the Ottawa River and Hull.
