The fonds consists of letters, 1946-1949, Anton Winterwerb wrote home to his parents while he was a prisoner of war in the Soviet Union. Also included are personal papers, including his discharge paper from military service, 1954, and his "Ahnenpass," [1930s].

Winterwerb, Anton 1926-1984 : Born in 1926, Anton Winterwerb was conscripted into the German army as a teenager, fighting on the Eastern front. Taken into captivity towards the end of the war, he remained a prisoner of war until 1949, when he was released. Having difficulty adjusting to German life after the war, he emigrated to Canada in 1957. He settled in Ottawa, where he worked at a variety of semi-skilled jobs that allowed him to use his European work experience as a base for acquiring new knowledge pertinent to performing whatever job he was doing.
