The fonds includes Rudolf Helling's personal papers, 1964-1982; correspondence, 1970-1982; his articles and research papers and/or studies prepared in the following fields: multiculturalism, 1965-1982; German Canadian life, 1972-1982; and socio-economic conditions in Ontario and neighbouring areas of the United States, 1960-1982. Also included is his manuscript entitled "A Socio-Economic History of German Canadians," 1975, as well research material he accumulated while writing his history on Germans in Canada.

Helling, R.A. (Rudolph Anton), 1929-1982 : Born in Bochum, Germany, Rudolf Helling came to North America in 1955 to pursue his docoral studies at Wayne State University. He took a position as lecturer at Assumption University in Windsor while still completing his doctorate, remaining there until 1961. For a brief period, he worked as visiting lecturer at different universities, and from 1967 to 1970 served as head of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Windsor. He remained with the Department until his death in 1982.

During his career, Dr. Helling conducted numerous studies, in particular in the area of community development and inter-group relations. These included monographs on economic conditions in Elliot Lake (1960), a study of the labour market in Windsor, Ontario (1964), a study of the position of Negroes, Chinese and Italians in the social structure of Windsor (1965), as well as a study of unemployment in the inner-core area of Detroit (1969). He prepared and presented papers on different aspects of German-Canadian life, 1972-1982, as well as was chosen by the Department of Secretary of State to write the history of Germans in Canada, for its Generations History Series. When the work was rejected by the Department, it was published in Germany, under the title "A Socio-Economic History of German-Canadians: They, Too, Founded Canada" (1984).
