The fonds includes personal papers, 1984-1987, as well as documentation pertaining to Hansch's contribution to German Canadian life through his participation in different social organizations. These include clippings, speech notes and other material, 1964-1978, relating to his involvement in the German Society of Winnipeg; correspondence and other material, 1967-1984, relating to Hansch's involvement in Canadian Lutheran World Relief; correspondece, minutes of meetings, correspondence, clippings and speeches, 1984-1986, documenting his involvement in the German Canadian Congress; correspondence and clippings, 1986, on the Chair of German Canadian Studies; as well as correspondence, clippings and other material, 1970-1981, on the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia.

Hansch, Ernst, 1928-1986 : Born in Ukraine, Ernst Hansch and his family fled from the Soviet Union during World War II. At the age of 16, he was conscripted into the German army. After his unit surrendered to the Americans, he was sent to a prisoner of war camp. Following his release, he trained to become a mechanic. On completing his training, he emigrated to Canada, in 1952. While working as a machinist with the CPR, he built homes in his spare time, and in 1955 started his own construction company. The construction work prospered, and soon the company was building not only private homes but also undertaking larger building projects.
As time allowed, Hansch became increasingly involved in community activities. An avid supporter of Lutheran World Relief, he not only contributed to it generously through financial aid, but also helped advertise its work among other members of his Church community. He was a founding member of the German Canadian Congress, and was involved in the establishment of the Chair of German Canadian Studies at the University of Winnipeg. He was a co-founder of the Canadian Benevolent Society for Germans from Russia, and shortly before his death was voted President of the Schiller Foundation, an organization devoted to supporting German Canadian cultural endeavours.
