Third of three documentaries featuring colour footage, diary excepts and letters of Canadians in wartime. It covers such aspects as: Canadian firefighters serving in England; the Italian campaign as depicted through Farley Mowat’s observations of battle during that campaign and amateur footage shot by nursing sister Maxine Slemon of a field hospital; bombing raids over Germany and the resulting devastation; homefront fund raising through such efforts as selling War Savings Stamps and holding picnics; prisoner of war camps in isolated parts of Canada; the escape of some German POWs; D-Day; the liberation of Paris and the Netherlands; Canadian troops making their way into Germany; the devastation of Germany; concentration camps; the May 8, 1945, VE Day celebrations in Toronto and the brawl that ensued in Halifax; the surrender of Japan; the release of Canadian POWs held by the Japanese and the return of Canadian servicemen and servicewomen at war’s end. One soldier, Donald Morden Choate Shaw, returned with one leg amputated. Footage shows him before he left for war service and was injured. <41mn>
