The series includes expressions of condolence following the death of the Right Honourable Pierre Elliott Trudeau on 28 September 2000.

Included are letters and cards of condolence received from a wide range of individuals and organizations.

The series also includes the official sympathy registers signed during the lying-in-state in Ottawa and Montreal, as well as registers signed across Canada, and registers signed in eleven Canadian embassies around the world.

Custodial history:

Sympathy registers were kept by Heritage Canada during the days of lay in state after the death of the Right Honourable Pierre Elliott Trudeau at Ottawa (Parliament) 29 September to 2 October and Montreal (City Hall), 3 October 2000.

Heritage Canada has received sympathy registers. Emails, cards, artefacts from the people of Canada.

In March 2004, Heritage Canada transferred the textual documents to Library and Archives Canada and artefacts to the Canadian Museum of Civilization.
