Item consists of a replica of the plaque left by Capt. J.E. Bernier on Parry's Rock, Melville Island on July 1st, 1909, claiming possession of the Arctic Archipelago for the Dominion of Canada. It is a full colour replica of the bronze original.

Physical description note:

According to correspondence within the Department of Public Works fonds, the plaque was cast from the exploration ship "Arctic's" supply of babbit-metal, on a wooden mould carved by Chief Engineer J.V. Koenig.

Custodial history:

This plaque originally hung on the West wall of the vestibule of the main entrance to the Library of Parliament. It was transferred to the Public Archives of Canada in 1926 upon the recommendation of Public Works Deputy Minister J.B. Hunter who observed that the Bernier plaque was more of "historical interest" rather than "Parliamentary interest".

This plaque is extremely heavy and requires qualified and capable staff in order to be safely handled during consultation. For general viewing, it does not need to be removed from the storage rack.
