Series consists of oversize petitions and addresses, drawn from various series for convenience in shelving. This is an artificial series.

The petitions and addresses for Quebec and Lower Canada are found in volumes 1 to 4 of the series and are varied in their content. For instance, there are addresses and petitions from the inhabitants of cities and towns, petitions from lumber merchants and other merchants, magistrates, bank presidents, religious bodies such as Wesleyan Methodists, etc. Subject matter includes, for example, local improvements, bank charter renewals, boundary lines, canals, legal sentences passed on individuals, protective tariffs, erection of a work-house, medical practices, etc.

Textual records (Electronic) The finding aid provides the date of the document, the occasion or purpose of the address or petition and the name and residence of the signatories. The finding aid relates not only to petitions and addresses in Lower Canada and Quebec, 1773-1840 but also to Upper Canada, 1828-1840, and Newfoundland, 1833. MSS0870 (90: Open)

Many of the documents are rolled or folded, presenting particular problems for research use. Where conservation work has been carried out, the documents may be placed in cabinets.

Custodial history:

These documents were formerly identified as Series E. They are now physically located in the series RG 1, E 16, but are described in RG 4 because of their intellectual affinity to RG 4.

Arrangement note:

The arrangement of the documents is roughly chronological within geographical designations: Quebec and Lower Canada, 1773-1840; Upper Canada, 1828-1840, and Newfoundland, 1833.
