First documentary in a three-part series using colour motion picture film footage and excerpts of diaries and letters to illustrate the views and role of Canadians in the Second World War and in the years leading up to the war. It begins with16mm colour film footage shot by Wilfred Prissick, amateur film maker, of the Canadian pilgrimage to Vimy on the occasion of the official ceremony to unveil the Vimy Ridge Memorial in 1936. His wife Ruby accompanied Prissick on the trip and recorded her impressions in her diary. Also shown is footage shot by Bluevale, Ontario travel agent Marion Walwyn as she tours Nazi Germany in the late 1930s, notably several SS officers marching in uniform. She filmed wartime scenes of bomb damage in London, England, where she worked at Canada House helping Canadian soldiers. There are excerpts of the diary of Montreal businessman Percy Jacobson, whose son Joe and Moe served with the Canadian forces.There are scenes of enlistment, training, the departure of Canadian troops for overseas service and men of the 48th Highlanders on board ship. German soldiers in a town square in Poland take taking a roll call of Jewish boys who are obliged to war a white armband bearing a blue Star of David. Other events depicted include Canadian families taking in children who have been sent to Canada to save them from the danger in Britain and a visit to Chequers, the official residence of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill by a Canadian delegation. A member of that delegation, New Brunswick businessman and politician Leonard O’Brien wrote about the visit in his diary and filmed Churchill in a casual costume Churchill called his playsuit. There is footage of the fighting in China, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, German troops in action and the devastation of the Battle of Dunkerque, German soldiers in a town square in Poland, taking stock of Jewish boys, each of whom is wearing a white armband with a blue Star of David. Back in Canada, Canadians celebrate Christmas with the annual Santa Claus Parade in Toronto and a family celebrates at home. The fall of Hong Kong is described through a written account by Chaplain James Barrett from St. Stephen's College Hospital in Hong Kong. <1h>
