This is the first part of a two-part story about Mad Cow Disease - a rare brain disorder of cattle that has the ability to jump species. The Mad Cow epidemic started in the United Kingdom and has spread to more than 20 countries around the world. It is also a story about cover-up and greed. APOCALYPSE COW examines new information on the tangled history and origins of the outbreak, exploring its potential impact on human health. Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) or 'Mad Cow Disease' first appeared in the United Kingdom in the 1980s. Spread by infected feed, eventually the disease affected over 180,000 British cattle. As the epidemic grew, the British government denied any danger to human health. Almost 15 years after the Mad Cow story began, an investigation into the epidemic concluded that the British government has knowingly misled consumers about the extent of the risk to human health. Even after the first BSE case was diagnosed in 1986, Britain continued to export cattle and infected meat and bone meal to more than 80 countries. Modern corporate food production that relies heavily on rendered meat protein is playing a huge role in the threat posed by Mad Cow. Now millions of people throughout the world have eaten cattle that may have been infected. More than a dozen European countries, from Ireland to Spain and as far away as Japan, have reported BSE and CJD (Creutzfeld-Jacob Disease) - a fatal neurological disease that destroys speech, memory and physical coordination in humans. To date, Mad Cow is responsible for the deaths of more than 150 people and thousands of cattle. APOCALYPSE COW features interviews with doctors involved in uncovering the link between Mad Cow Disease and CJD in Britain and Canada, and the three scientists suspended for their criticism of Canada's health policy and food safety. The announcement of a Canadian BSE case in 2003 has created an economic crisis that could force thousands of cattle farmers in the country into bankruptcy. <1h>
