This episode focuses on Toronto's Union Station, built between 1913-1920, after the great fire of 1904 made room in the downtown core. The several railways involved at that time were fiercely competitive and fought with the city over the placement of the tracks. Eventually, Prince Edward was on the first train out of Union Station in Toronto, headed for Alberta. The building, itself a hallmark of Beaux Art architecture, reflects the grandeur of the civic style and the power the railways held in this era. Personal testimony from Sheila Carter, Mariam Strond, and The Bartons, along with commentary by the manager of Union Station, Pio Mammone, architect Michael McClelland and a former Toronto councillor, Tony O'Donahue. All flesh out the history of the magnificent structure. <23mn 5s>Language:EnglishNotes:Detailed holdings information: -
