Scottish emigré, William Notman, one of Canada's first great photographers, is considered an artist and an important historian. His studio produced over 160,000 photographs and these traces of life in the 1800's, be they portraits, character studies, landscapes or industrials, reveal much about the evolution of photographic technology and techiniques, including steroscopic cameras, composite collage, and post mortem photography. Interviews with gallery directors, archivists, photographers and historians include: Lilly Koltun (Portrait Gallery of Canada), Nora Hague & Stanley Triggs (Notman Photographic Archives), Roger Hall (University of Western Ontario), Dennis Reid (Art Gallery of Ontario), Joan Schwartz (Queen's University), and Jeff Nolte (photographer). Notman's business eventually expanded from Montreal to Toronto, Halifax, Ottawa, and St. John, while he himself also visited Ivy League colleges in the United States of America to produce portraits of distinguished persona from these environ. One of the many extraordinary jobs fielded by the Notman studios included the documentation of the recce for the new Canadian Transcontinental Railway, a tour that produced astounding landscape images of the stunning beauty of a yet untamed western Canada. A few years later Notman's son, William McFarlain Notman, was to continue with this landscape photography and he produced an infamous collection of work that documents the expanse of Canada through the reach of the Canadian Pacific Railway. <57mn 37s>
