Canadian archival history may have been lost were it not for a researcher who uncovered the hundreds of portraits by Chow Dong Hoy. Hoy contributed a broader view and a photographic history of First Nations and Chinese immigrants living in the towns of Northern British Columbia. After arriving in Canada in 1902, Chinese born Hoy, worked his way around British Columbia, learning the native Carrier language as well as English. After securing employment in the gold mines during the summer months, he taught himself photography during the winter. He opened a general store in 1913, where taking portraits earned him the money he needed to support himself and eventually his family, who immigrated to Canada in 1919. Upon his death, Hoy was a happy and prosperous man. Twenty-five years later he received nation-wide acclaim for over 1400 negatives, almost never seen, that show the everyday life of First Nations, unlike any other photographs of the period. <48mn 38s>
