Interview of Victor Himmelfarb about his experiences in the Spanish Civil War. Himmelfarb was a graduate pharmacist. Himmelfarb speaks about his motivation for going to Spain, his departure from New York in July 1937 with two ambulances assigned to the International Brigade and three other Canadians, his not being a member of the Communist Party, his arrival in Paris, travelling by bus to the south of France, the people assembled at this point, travelling over the mountains in to Spain, arriving in Figueros, being sent to Albacete, being chosen to work as a pharmacist in base hospitals, his being sorry that he did not get to serve at the front, meeting members of the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion in the hospital, staying in Spain until January 1939, travelling around Spain from hospital to hospital to locate Canadian nationals to be repatriated, shortages of bandages and other medical supplies, the repatriation of people to France, travelling to England and then to Halifax, being interviewed by Gregory Clark on the train back to Toronto, the huge reception at Union Station in Toronto, Cecil Smith at the train station, the problems of getting used to life in Canada again, his belief that his service in Spain was the finest thing he did, speculation that history would have been different if some of the repatriates had gone to China as they volunteered to do, and his being turned down for Second World War service because of faulty hearing.
