Interview of Konstantine Olynuk, known as Mike, about his experiences in the Spanish Civil War. He speaks about his life before moving to Canada in 1929. He was born in Austria and grew up in Romania. He moved to Canada to get land, worked on a farm in Saskatchewan and moved to Toronto circa 1941. He worked for a timber contractor in South Porcupine. He became interested in the situation in Spain because of his anti-fascist beliefs and his interest in the labour movement. He got involved in collecting money for Spain and encouraged three men from South Porcupine to go to Spain to fight. Shortly afterwards, he heard Tim Buck speak. He was also concerned about the fight by Ukrainians for their rights in Russia. He speaks about getting a passport and visa, travelling to France, the sympathy of the people with whom he billeted in Paris, crossing the border into Spain, the warm welcome from the Spanish people, travelling to Barcelona, people he knew in the Polish Brigade, training, the Gandesa front, anarchists, Communism in the Battalion, the role of the Commissar in raising the political morale, his first day at the front, the 15th Brigade and the 13th Brigade, his experiences when his unit was shipped out, the International Brigade, enthusiasm for the cause, the fighting slogans of the Communists, the repatriation, the last parade, being in a concentration camp in France, being prevented from returning to Canada, being interrogated at the Canadian Consulate, his arrival in Canada in 1939, his experiences upon his return, his being rejected for service in the Canadian Army, joining the Toronto Scottish in 1942, his experiences in the army in the Second World War, Fascist atrocities, his support for Communist ideas, his objection to church dominance in Spain and his political views.
