Description:

Interview with a Southeast Asian refugee sponsored by the Gray Sister of Immaculate Conception Sponsor Group. The refugee's adaptation process and overall satisfaction with private sponsorship are discussed. The interviewee is asked a set list of questions which include the following topics: family background; reasons for leaving Southeast Asia; arrival to Canada; past and present employment; perception of life in Canada; adjustment period and sponsors' help; social contact with the sponsors; language training; and physical and mental state since arrival to Canada. <1h>

1. Most interviews are part of a set of three interviews that includes a refugee interview originally recorded in his/her mother-tongue, the refugee interview translated into English, and the private sponsor interview.~2. The recording is part of a study funded by Employment and Immigration Canada which focuses on private versus public sponsorship of Southeast Asian Refugees who arrived in Canada in the late 1970s (Boat People).~3.
