Miss Edith Macpherson (of Kingston) is dressed as the game "Tric-trac" (a version of backgammon) for a fancy dress ball hosted by Lord and Lady Dufferin on February 23, 1876.

A description of her costume appeared in the Toronto Globe on February 24, 1876, which reads: "Wore an underskirt of black velvet, with scarlet and white points of satin edged with gold cord, to represent a backgammon board, the men of similar colours being placed at regular distances around the bottom. A white satin overskirt, with rows of scarlet and black men. A black velvet waist with points edged with gold cord, falling over the skirt the centre forming a representation of a chess board, the chequers being formed of white and black velvet edged with gold braid, puffed white satin sleeves with black velvet points, the men in scarlet and black being placed between the points. Gilt dice boxes were slung at the left side by means of a heavy gold cahin, which was secured on the right shoulder by smaller boxes of gold; a similar pair was fastened on the hair. Three sets of dice of various sizes connected with gold links served for earrings, while the throatlet was composed of ebony backgammon men, on which were crimson chess characters raised on a blue ground, the king being the pendent."

Although the Earl of Dufferin's Grand Fancy Ball took place on February 23, 1876, photographs of costumed individuals and groups were taken after the event itself. While the majority were taken in February and March, some of the guests were also photographed in April.
