Description:

Interview with a Southeast Asian refugee sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph Sponsor Group in Pembroke, Ontario. The refugee's adaptation process and overall satisfaction with private sponsorship are discussed. The interviewee is asked a set list of questions which include the following topics: family background; reasons for leaving Southeast Asia; arrival to Canada; past and present employment; perception of life in Canada; adjustment period and sponsors' help; social contact with the sponsors; language training; and physical and mental state since arrival to Canada. <2h>

1. Most interviews are part of a set of three interviews that includes a refugee interview originally recorded in his/her mother-tongue, the refugee interview translated into English, and the private sponsor interview.~2. The recording is part of a study funded by Employment and Immigration Canada which focuses on private versus public sponsorship of Southeast Asian Refugees who arrived in Canada in the late 1970s (Boat People).~3.
