Description:

Interview with Mrs. Polk, a member of the Trinity-St. Andrews United Church Sponsor Group in Renfrew. She shares her experience of sponsoring and helping a Southeast Asian family. The interviewee is asked a set list of questions which focus on the following issues: reasons for becoming a sponsor; the formation and responsibilities of the sponsor group; advice and support from other organisations; pledging of the funds required for the sponsorship year; Department of Immigration bureaucracy; background of the refugees and the adjustment and adaptation period (e.g., language training and job hunting); social contact and financial arrangements between the sponsors and the refugees; and reflections on the positive aspects and drawbacks of private sponsorship. <2h>

1. Most interviews are part of a set of three interviews that includes a refugee interview originally recorded in his/her mother-tongue, the refugee interview translated into English, and the private sponsor interview.~2. The recording is part of a study funded by Employment and Immigration Canada which focuses on private versus public sponsorship of Southeast Asian Refugees who arrived in Canada in the late 1970s (Boat People).~3. There is no corresponding original refugee interview.~4. There is no corresponding translated refugee interview.
