Dr. Edward Malloch is dressed as "A North American Trapper" for a fancy dress ball hosted by Lord and Lady Dufferin on February 23, 1876.

A description of Dr. Malloch's outfit appears on page 2 in the February 24th, 1876 edition of the "Ottawa Free Press,": "Malloch, Dr. - North American Trapper. Long black wig, costume skirt of smoked caribou skin, embroidered in silk, to represent flowers of the forest, round the cuffs and collar; broad band of silk worn down the breast and round the bottom of the shirt, trimmed with narrow strips of ermine and mink fur; along all the seams fringe of caribou skin; leggings, black broadcloth, with bead work at the lower outside seam, gartered below the knee, tearlet silk sash containing fire bag, knife, tomahawk, short rifle over the shoulder, and skins; feet gear, moccasins, embroidered in silk."

Although the Earl of Dufferin's Grand Fancy Ball took place on February 23, 1876, photographs of costumed individuals and groups were taken after the event itself. While the majority were taken in February and March, some of the guests were also photographed in April.
