Description:

Jack Borden, a Mountie, (Neal Hart), is sent to apprehend Lawson/Murdoch, a seller of worthless mining stocks, who may have killed his mine foreman. Injured when his horse stumbles, Borden is taken in by a stranger (Cowles) and his daughter. After changing into civilian clothes, he crosses the border and heads for New York. There he confronts Lawson in his office, but he escapes after a struggle. Borden locates him in a dive on the Bowery but the he escapes again after a general melee. <61mn>

1. Elements attached to this ISN were produced during the restoration of the film, which used material from the John Conning nitrate print and the Archive Film Agency nitrate print. Two nitrate prints were used, one from John Conning and the other from Archive Film Agency.~2. In the restored version all the intertitles were frozen and a new head title generated.~3. The running time is based on the measured length of the archives’ master print calculated at 20 fps.~4. The city scenes were shot in New York.~5. The streetcars are those of the Third Avenue Railway Company. This was an extensive system, by no means limited to Third Avenue, and was notable for the (centre) third rail conductor, clearly visible in the film, rather than an overhead wire and trolley.~6. The steam locomotive seen at the level crossing is a camelback and is almost certainly from the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western because it has the head light in the centre (though it could be from the New York, Ontario, & Western for same reason. The Central Railroad of New Jersey also had camelbacks but with the light on top.)~7. The train seen in the country station has FONDA AND JOHNSTOWN RLY on the tender. This line’s full name was the Fonda, Johnstown and Gloversville Railroad Company. Only 26 route miles long, it was situated at the southern tip of the Adirondacks, between Syracuse and Albany, in Upper New York State. Fonda is just a few miles west of Albany.~8. The country station is at Mayfield, NY, a town about three miles north of Gloversville. The station was torn down in the 1950s.~9. There were mines in the area in the teens and twenties so it is likely the scenes with the mine shaft were shot up there.~10. In 1919, Blazed Trail Productions Inc. had a studio at Gloversville so it is possible that this facility was used to shoot interiors for TANGLED TRAILS. Blazed Trail Productions made two-reel Mountie films which were distributed by Arrow Film Corporation. Two are known to exist: WHEN BIG DAN RIDES and THE HEART OF BIG DAN.
