Canada. National Battlefields Commission : In 1908, an Act of Parliament established the National Battlefields Commission (S.C. 1908, C. 57-58) for acquiring, restoring and preserving the historic sites where battles were fought in the City of Québec. On 17 March 1908, the Canadian Parliament passed the Act Respecting the National Battlefields at Quebec (7-9 Edward Vii Chap. 57), granting authority "to acquire and preserve the great historic battlefields at Quebec, restoring so far as possible, their principal features, so as to make them Canadian National Park." Sir George Garneau formed a committee known as the Quebec Landmark Commission to prepare recommendations concerning the acquisition of lands where significant battlefields were fought. These lands would be purchased, expropriated or donated to establish an historic site or park. The National Battlefields Commission seeks to educate and promote public awareness of significant events such as the Plains of Abraham and commemorate historic battlefield sites within the vicinity of Québec City.

Since 1953, the National Battlefields Commission has focused on preserving historic sites and parks. It is structured along similar organizational lines as Parks Canada, and because of its similarities with the federal parks mandate, the National Battlefields Commission has reported to Parliament through the ministers responsible for Parks Canada, that is, Northern Affairs and National Resources between 1953-1966; Indian Affairs and Northern Development between 1966-1979; and the Department of Environment. Since the creation of the department in 1993, the National Battlefields Commission reports to Parliament through the Department of Canadian Heritage.
