In this extraordinary story, Charles Dillon covers with privileged insight, the entire history of the Royal Canadian Navy from pre-World War II beginnings until it was dissolved into the amalgam called the "Canadian Forces". This record is especially helpful to understanding the way the Navy envolved; particularly with regard to the contribution of the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve. These pre-war volunteers were considered as "family" by the Regular Force who understood the need to encourage and teach their part time colleagues... as the very best way to build up Canada's navy for the fast approaching war. This was the vision and the legacy of Walter Hose.~Dillon was born in Montreal in 1912 and grew up fluent in French and English. The Dillons moved to Ottawa where young Charles was a Sea Scout and went to Lisgar Collegiate... still and again, in April 2001, rated Ottawa's top Public School! His story starts at age nine when he toured the ill-fated cruiser HMS Raleigh. He then takes us entertainingly through accounts of prewar training cruises in HMC ships with glimpses of life at sea and of picnics on tropical beaches... and even working under sail on the maiden cruise of HMCS Venture.~Then comes the expected war which he introduces with factual but comic-opera scenarios which sometimes occured before we learned to react with purpose. His wartime exploits are covered briefly, a stint in HMS Royal Sovereign then in HMCS Prince Henry and the Aleutian Campaign and finally in the carrier HMS Nabob from commissioning to action in "Operation Goodwood" and her miraculous return from Norway after being torpedoed.~Dillon stayed on in the Regular Force after the war and the remaining narrative exposes us to these years... ending as he and his colleagues become the concluding members of Canada's last Naval Board.~Much of the flavour of this documentary comes from Dillon's old photos and also from personal movies taken by Admiral H.G. DeWolf. An unexpected find was discovery of Nelson Lay's colour movies in HMS Nabob included with permission of Mrs. Beth Lay. And finally, movies taken aloft in HMCS Venture and contributed by Captain R.L. Lane, another Seasoned Sailor whose story is recorded, but not as yet released. <58mn>
