A documentary film which looks at the struggles faced by Soviet Russian Jews who wish to emigrate from the Soviet Union to Israel, or "Refuseniks". Through the use of archival footage, dramatizations and interviews the film discusses the historical relationship between the Communist government and its Jewish citizens since the early 20th century, before the Bolshevik revolution. The film contains several interviews with individuals who have applied for permission to emigrate from the Soviet Union and have been refused. People discuss how they have been harassed by police and government after their initial application for emigration and how they were imprisoned before they were granted permission to leave Russia. The film also reveals the somewhat harmonious relation between the State and Soviet Jews after the revolution and how things quickly changed under Joseph Stalin. Interviewees include: Eugeni Lein, David and Esther Markish, Martin Gilbert, Boris Klotz, Elena Dubianskaia, Lev Roitland, Ruth Alexandrovich, Leonid Kelbert, [Yuri Kolka], Alec Zelichenok and Inna Elbert. <47mn 9s>
