A documentary film whic looks at the history and importance of the Mississippi river to the agricultural and industrial economies of the United States. The film talks of how the river flows for 2500 miles to the Gulf of Mexico and is fed by almost every major river in the United States, such as the Ohio, Missouri, White, Black, Arkansas rivers along with many others. Explained is how important the river was in the development of the cotton industry before the Civil War and later its value in developing the lumber industry at its headwaters. The film also warns of the power of the river, and also of the damages caused by the unmanaged exploitation of the lands along the river valley, such as erosion of top soil, destruction of forests and poor soil quality for farmers. The film film then talks of how through the cooperation of the Tennessee Valley Authority and the United States government the river and its lands can be saved by the construction of dams and the control of the water levels. <28mn 9s>
