Description:

Esso presents this film about the history of news and the need for news. It depicts means of communication from past to present, from tribal drums, methods in ancient Greece, Medieval Times and the New World, town criers, carrier pigeons, the use of dog sleds to carry news in the "frozen North", Morse code, the telephone, teletype and spoken news on radio. It shows the New York office of United Press, various jobs in the news gathering process, assembling news from the teletype machine into a final broadcast and an example of a news flash on the U.S. gunboat Panay being bombed and sunk. The film states that every word must count because every second counts. <20mn>
