Interview of novelist Morley Callaghan about Montreal Gazette sports editor Austin "Dink" Carroll, recorded for a CBC radio documentary on Dink Carroll broadcast on the BETWEEN OURSELVES series on 19 December 1975. Callaghan speaks about: his friendship with Carroll; Carroll's career as a kicker with the McGill University football team in the 1920s; how he met Carroll through Carroll's brother Bill; Carroll's work selling bonds in Montreal in the late 1920s, a job that ended with the stock market crash in 1929; Carroll's difficulty in finding work in Montreal and Toronto; Carroll's interest in the craft of writing and in literature; Carroll's success in writing sports stories that were published in such magazines as the Saturday Evening Post, Collier's and Esquire, the latter publishing his story about Howie Morenz; Callaghan's admiration for Carroll's writing skill; Carroll's wife Peg Parker; Carroll's work as public relations man for a ball club in Toronto; Carroll's return to Montreal to take the job of sports editor of the Montreal Gazette; Carroll's tendency to speak softly and the apocryphal story that this characteristic led his football teammates to invent the huddle so that they could hear him; Carroll's interest in Callaghan's writing; Montreal bars Carroll and Callaghan hung out in and the people they met there; a book launch party they attended at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Montreal for Callaghan's book The Loved and the Lost and how the characters in the book were based on the bar crowd; Carroll's friend Ted [McCormick]; Carroll's generosity; people Carroll knew in the sports world and outside it; Carroll's interest in people and why that made him a good sports writer; Carroll's love of conversation and reading; Carroll's religious beliefs and other qualities. <55mn>
