Description:

Television documentary on the life of conservationist, author and lecturer Grey Owl, who died in 1938. Archival footage, stills, interviews and narrative by George Finstad provide a glimpse into the life of this man who chose to adopt the identity of a Canadian Indian despite his English origin as Archibald S. Belaney. Quotations from Grey Owl's writings accompany archival footage of camping trips with his Indian wife Anahareo, who urged him to abandon trapping; his life at Beaver Lodge in Prince Albert National Park; his articles and books; and headlines proclaiming his life as a "hoax". In interview segments, Grey Owl's wife comments on their relationship; and John G. Diefenbaker, former Prime Minister of Canada, calls him "the greatest conservationist that this nation has produced". Additional noteworthy footage of: trapped animals; adopted baby beavers; Diefenbaker's visit to Beaver Lodge; and crowds at Grey Owl's lectures in London, England. <30mn>
