Part one of a two-part television documentary hosted by Lovat Dickson that traces the rise of the Massey family in Canada from its rural, Methodist beginnings to its prominence in business, politics and the theatre. The lives of several generations of Masseys are illustrated through dramatized scenes described in voice-over by actors representing family members. Through footage and stills accompanied by narrative, the transformation of the Masseys from farmers to businessmen is linked to the influx of immigrants in the area; the development of rail transportation; Confederation in 1867; the machine age; and the growth of capitalism. Dramatized sequences portray Daniel Massey's efforts to reduce the drudgery and inefficiency of farming through machinery, including scenes of Daniel and his son Hart on the farm and at the Newcastle Foundry and Machine Manufactory. Additional dramatic scenes include: Rebecca Massey (Hart's grandmother) telling stories about the war of 1812 in which her husband Samuel died; Hart's marriage to Eliza Ann Phelps; and Charles' funeral at age 36 (he died of typhoid fever). Noteworthy stills include: photographs of Hart's children Charles, Lillian, Chester, Walter and Fred; the Massey home in Cleveland; pages from "Massey's Illustrated", the company magazine; drawings of foundry workers; and a photo of Egerton Ryerson, the Methodist "circuit rider" (saddlebag preacher).
