A documentary on the art of the Haida Indians of British Columbia. Narrative comments by William Whitehead and George McLean accompany footage and interviews in this examination of the relationship of contemporary Haida art and artists to a changing environment, to the earlier art of Charles Edenshaw, and to the beginnings of Haida culture in Canada almost 10,000 years ago. The importance of the supernatural, ceremonies, myths, symbols and tradition in the history of the Haida tribe is explained and illustrated with photographs and footage of totem poles in museums or decaying along the shores of the Queen Charlotte Islands (B.C.). Close-ups of early and modern Haida carvings, jewelry and totems convey the power and magic behind these images that have outlived the virtual disintegration of these "sea hunters". Photographs of Charles Edenshaw (born in 1839) and his miniature argillite totem poles, silver bracelets and ceremonial boxes mark the transition from primitive to fine art by the Haida tribe's most important artist. The following artists discuss their roots in Haida art and various art forms: Florence Davidson, Bob Davidson, Jim Hart and Bill Reid, who sketches a dogfish design to demonstrate Haida art as "variations on a single note". An excerpt from Reid's film of a 1957 rescue mission to collect and preserve remaining totems in the Queen Charlotte Islands illustrates his commitment to the preservation of Haida art and culture. <90mn>
