A documentary on Ste. Marie among the Hurons, a French settlement in Huronia, Ontario, used as a missionary centre in 1639 by Jesuit priests led by Jérôme Lalemant. A group that included modern Jesuits, a historian and a writer, gathered at the site (restored in 1970) to experience life at Ste. Marie by using the implements, techniques, customs and clothing of that period. Footage of their activities during the Christmas season, accompanied by music from St. Michael's Choir School and supplemented by narrative history and artwork from the 17th century, conveys a sense of the past at Ste. Marie. Subjects discussed by the visitors at Ste. Marie and through voice-over narrative include: the nature of the Iroquois, enemies of the Hurons and the French; the relationship of the Hurons with the French; and the destruction of Ste. Marie in 1649 as a result of Indian wars incited by the fur trade. Typical Ste. Marie activities shown in a footage include: a hunter on snowshoes with musket; cornmeal ground with a stone; wood chopped and hauled on a sleigh; cooking over a fire; pottery making; and a method of peeling long strips of bark from black ash trees often used by the Jesuits. The evening Christmas service includes shots of the procession to church, prayers, and mass in Latin. <30mn>
