This television documentary re-traces events that led to the influx of United Empire Loyalists to Canada following the American Revolution of 1776. Host Robin Ward narrates the history of the Loyalist exodus from the United States to Canada's Maritime Provinces, supplemented by maps; stills of paintings of significant people and sites; footage of re-enacted historical events; interviews by a historian; and footage of dramatized scenes of Loyalist life. Ward notes the diversity of race, religion, and background among the Loyalists and describes the causes, motives and hardships of those who opposed American colonies seeking independance from British rule. Ward portrays a mayor, settler, potter, scribe, and brother of a revolutionary sympathizer during dramatized scenes of Loyalist life in Shelburne, Nova Scotia. Ceremonial re-enactments recreate the decisive battle of Yorktown in 1781, where American troops aided by a French fleet defeated the British; and the arrival of Loyalists at St. John, New Brunswick, in 1783. Historian Murray Barcley interviews a "soldier" from a re-enactment, as well as surviving Loyalists whose verbal accounts are highlighted in dramatic vignettes. Noteworthy stills include portraits of George Washington; King George III; John Graves Simcoe and Elizabeth Simcoe; and sketches of Loyalists sites by military surveyors of the time.
