Television documentary on Robert Bateman, Canadian artist and naturalist famous for his wildlife paintings. Bateman's lifestyle, his affinity for nature, and his approach to painting are conveyed through footage of: Bateman at work; on nature forays; presenting a slide show of his work; and talking to viewers at an exhibit. The artist's on-screen voice-over comments about his inspirations and techniques, factual narrative by Cy Strange, and stills of animals in their natural setting juxtaposed with Bateman's artistic portrayal of the same subjects, further illustrate the influences of the Impressionists, the Group of Seven and Andrew Wyeth on his work, and the evolution of his art to naturalistic realism. Noteworthy footage includes: Bateman with his wife and two boys at home and on nature hikes; his use of a mirror image to correct distortions in paintings; a major exhibition of his work at the Royal Ontario Museum (Toronto), where he received training as a naturalist; and various stages of work on his painting of an owl. <60mn>
