Television documentary hosted by David Suzuki. On location in Japan, Canada, Britain and France, Suzuki explores a variety of spas as alternative methods of health care treatment through descriptions of their historical context, footage of patients, and interviews with health care practitioners. Sequences in Japan show Suzuki being covered with 'regenerative' sand and patients immersing themselves in hot mud. In Canada, ski resort visitors are viewed relaxing in the hot springs of Banff, Alberta; and children receive spa treatment for asthma at the Ontario Crippled Children's Centre. In Britain, clips include visitors to Bath lining up to buy bottled spa water and patients being massaged in spas. Footage in France includes: children in La Bourbouie being soaked, sprayed and saturated with spa water during asthma treatment; patients in Dax immersed to the neck or packed with hot mud; and patients in Capvern-les-Bains imbibing or being sprayed by thermal waters. Doubts about the scientific validity of spa treatment are expressed by Dr. Hugh Smythe, Director of the Rheumatic Disease Unit at Wellesley Hospital in Toronto, during interview footage and by Suzuki, who notes that spas are less costly and less risky than drugs. <60mn>
