Film about a Canadian government expedition to observe ice conditions from ships and from the air. The expedition, under Major N.B. McLean, expedition commander, and Major T.A. Lawrence, Royal Canadian Air Force commander and squadron leader, left Ottawa in 1927 and returned in 1928. George H. Valiquette was official cameraman. Sequences on members of the expedition on board ships, and using a Fokker aircraft. Footage includes: icebergs, rough seas, the bow of ship CGS Stanley cutting through water, the airbase and buildings at Nottingham Island, a tractor hauling a Fokker monoplane over snow, a blizzard piling snow around buildings, a blinding storm obscuring the view of the main building, men levelling snow for takeoffs, a longshot of Fokker aircraft airborne over hills, a plane landing, Flight Lieutenant Leitch getting and greeting other fliers, longshot of a tractor hauling a plane, two Inuit children eating blubber, a crew changing propellers on a Fokker, a man wading through deep snow in a windstorm, a meteorologist reading temperature instruments, a snowstorm blowing around buildings, and shots of First-Sergeant Caggie and First-Officer Carr-Harris. Ships involved were Canadian Government ships Stanley, Larch and Montcalm. Places seen: Hudson's Strait, Nottingham Island, Wakeham Bay, Port Burwell, and Cape Hope. Also includes sequences on a wrecked Fokker being dismantled and loaded on board ship and on a polar bear being skinned on deck of ship.
