St. John's is the oldest Canadian Anglican parish west of the Great Lakes. It was established in October 1820 by the Rev. John West, the first Anglican priest in Western Canada. West arrived from England to serve as chaplain to the Hudson's Bay officers and men, pastor to the Selkirk Settlers and missionary to the First Nations and Métis peoples in the area. There have been four churches on the site, the first constructed in 1822.
