Fourth in a six-part series exploring the work and activities of home economists in developing countries. With Program Four narrator May Maskow looks at Canada's far north, the distinct culture of Native peoples, new influences of southerners in the north, and their influence on Native peoples. Similarities in the transition from a stone age culture to a technological culture is compared to that faced by developing countries. The concept of twinning in southern and northern Canada in dealing with this transition is also discussed. Individuals who have lived in northen Canada or those who have worked with Native communities in the north are asked to speak for themselves.~Maskow interviews Marjorie Schurman, an individual working in the north with the Hudson Bay Company. Schurman speaks to the affect of modern values and technologies on the Inuit people, the problems encountered when placing the assumptions of one culture upon another, adoption in Inuit communities and availability of infant formula, the program that led to her receipt of the General Food Award for Nutrition Communication in 1981, her opinion of twinning projects and the positive results of such projects.~Maskow interviews Emily Reed, Professor of Home Economics Education at the University of McGill in Montreal. Reed speaks to her observations with regard to the influence of southern Canada and technology on traditional Native customs, the development of home economic careers appropriate to life in the far north, and educational courses being taught in the north to reflect the lifestyle, land, and climate of the northern Native peoples.~Maskow interviews Connie Sweet, a nurse in Great Whale River, a community on James Bay. She speaks to the food habits of the Inuit, Indian and White people from the south, Goose Break and hunting for geese, nutrition problems involved with the freezing of goose, and infrequency of breast feeding by Inuit and Indian peoples at Great Whale River.~Maskow interviews Dr. Jean Steckle, former Chairman of the International Development Committee of the Canadian Home Economics Association in Ottawa. Steckle speaks of the Native perception of nutrient value in food purchased in a store as compared to that obtained through hunting or fishing, and the special education material published by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and used as an educational tool.~The program closes with information concerning the program schedule, program synopsis and production information. <28mn>
