Unedited interview filmed for the CBC television series THE DAYS BEFORE YESTERDAY : STRUGGLE FOR NATIONHOOD, of newspaper reporter Alex Hume. Hume talks about: how Norm Cambpell dubbed Louis St. Laurent "Uncle Louis"; Hume's view that the image of St. Laurent as chairman of the board is too simplistic; his view that St. Laurent was the most natural of the five prime ministers he covered as a reporter; St. Laurent's belief in religion, family and Canada; St. Laurent's relationship with the press; St. Laurent's belief that it was his duty to become leader of the party; Hume's view that St. Laurent would have stepped aside for C.D. Howe; the relationship between St. Laurent and Howe; Howe's contribution to the Allied victory in World War Two; Howe's desire to control industrial production in the 1950s with the same degree of control he had in wartime; Howe's pipeline project; St. Laurent's election defeat in 1957; St. Laurent's world tour; old age pension increases; George Drew's strength as an administrator and his decision to attack the leadership instead of campaigning on the issues.~Hume also talks about: William Lyon Mackenzie King; King's motivations; the diary King wrote; King's diary; King's regret that he did not marry and have a family; King's enjoyment of the company of women and of dancing, and C.D.
