Recording documents the first discussion session of the World Summit for Children (WSC) held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Prime Minister Brian Mulroney of Canada and President Musa Traore of Mali co-chair the proceedings. The three themes discussed are as follows: ensuring child survival; protection of children; and enhancing child development. A total of 55 minutes is devoted to each theme. Each theme is introduced by two speakers who speak for up to 5 minutes, followed by four speakers who comment on the introductory statements. The general discussion follows. The first theme is introduced by Lieutenant General Hossain Mohammad, President of Bangladesh, and Turgot Ozal, President of Turkey. The leaders of Barbados, Chile and Nigeria then comment on the introductory statements. The general discussion follows.~The second theme is introduced by President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda and the President of Czechoslovakia. The leaders of France, Venezuela, Nicaragua and a Minister from the Council of the Ukranian/Soviet Republic then comment on the introductory statements. The general discussion follows.~The third theme is introduced by the Prime Minister Toshiki Kaifu of Japan and Fernando Collor de Mello, President of the Federated Republic of Brazil. The leaders of Great Britain, Spain, Yugoslavia and Gambia then comment on the introductory statements. The general discussion follows.~The concluding session of the WSC follows. WSC co-chairs, Prime Minister Mulroney and President Traore, and Swedish Prime Minister Ingvar Carlsson make their closing statements. A draft of the joint Declaration and Plan of Action on the Survival, Protection and Development of Children, the resulting document of the WSC, is then read by six young people. Each child reads a passage of the Declaration in one of the six official languages of the United Nations. The Declaration is then signed by 73 of the 159 governments represented at the Summit. <6h>
