Footage shot for a documentary on Lester B. Pearson, entitled MR. PEARSON. It begins with soundtrack only, of a conversation in a car on the way to the airport, with Jim Coutts asking what the Ethiopian flag looks like. The soundtrack also records the sounds of Pearson and his wife at the airport for the welcoming ceremony for Haile Selassie. They walk past the Canadian Guards, take their positions and God Save the Queen Plays. At this point the image appears. It shows: the continuation of the ceremony; the Guards on parade at attention; the Pearsons standing with the wife of Haile Selassie; Selassie and Pearson sitting behind Governor General Georges P. Vanier as Vanier makes a speech; Pearson makes a speech, praising Selassie for liberating his nation (image missing at this point); sound and images of Pearson and his wife watching Selassie and his entourage get into cars; shots of Richard O'Hagan, Pearson's press secretary, and Jim Coutts, Pearson's appointments secretary, looking on. Next are scenes of: Pearson at his desk in the Centre Block, reading the newspaper and then going over documents; secretary Mary Macdonald giving him an update on his schedule; Coutts asking Pearson to pick up the telephone and tell the Liberal Party chairman in Albert that he is doing a good job; Pearson makes an excuse not to answer the phone; Macdonald talks about the subject and then wishes him good luck in the House of Commons. Out-of-sequence shot of the drive to the airport to welcome Selassie. O'Hagan and Coutts shown in the car. The Pearsons at the airport with the Governor General. They wait for the plane to land and greet Selassie upon his arrival. Next is footage shot on 17 September 1963: Pearson is shown in New York, leaving his hotel suite and getting into a car. He is going to the United Nations according to the sync slate. Continues with shots of: Pearson in his car in New York; talking to his driver, and comments on a photograph being taken.~Continues with shots of: Pearson in the car in New York, talking to the driver and other people in the car; interviewer tells Pearson he wants him to give a candid impression of himself; Pearson commenting on the flags outside the UN; Pearson getting out of the car, talks to the driver and calls for Jim Coutts to give him directions; United Press photographer asks Pearson to pose for a photo; and Pearson greeting colleagues.
