Compilation of historic audiovisual documents prepared for a presentation to the Radio and Television News Directors Association of Canada, Halifax, 2 June 1979.~Governor General Lord Frederick Arthur Stanley. Still photo of Lord Stanley as he is heard talking about Edison's phonograph at the Toronto Industrial Exhibition of 1888.~Klondyke Gold Rush Lures Thousands to Seek Fortune. Brief harbour scene followed by silent shots of miners at work in the gold fields with picks, shovels, wheelbarrows and a horse-drawn scoop in 1898.~Governor General and Lady Minto Cross Frozen St. Lawrence. Silent sequence on a group of men hauling an "ice boat" acrosee jumbled ice as Lord and Lady Minto sit in it and hang on.~New Recruits Train in Toronto. Several shots of recruits, some still in civilian clothes, marching in a city park, practicing rifle drill, semaphore communication, close order drill, and advancing on the double in 1917.~Dartmouth Observes Natal Day. British Canadian Pathe News item showing sculling and canoe races, swimming race, and so on in celebration of the city's 171st anniversary in 1921.~Lord and Lady Byng are Welcomed in Quebec City. Sequence on the Lady Grey arriving, guns thundering salute from the Citadel, their Excellencies disembarking and being welcomed by uniformed officials. Byng inspects the honour guard, rides to the Legislature, and after the oath-taking ceremony, Lord and Lady Byng return to the Citadel - 1921.~The First Cross-Canada Radio Network is Inaugurated at Canada's Diamond Jubilee. Still photos of the Peace Tower, honoured guests on a dais, a choir and large crowds. The Peace Tower Carillon can be heard. A commentator remarks on the importance of the occasion as this first broadcast is heard around the world - 1927.~Moose River Mine Rescue. Composite picture of rescue workers labouring to save three men trapped underground in 1936. J. Frank Willis of the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission reports from the site.~Matthew Halton at the Battle of Carpiquet Airport, Caen, Normandy. Still photos of Matthew Halton tending his radio equipment and soldiers crouching behind a wall manning a machine gun. Halton delivers his report on the sound track and talks about the impending massive Canadian attack to begin at 5 am, just a few minutes away. Halton gives the countdown and the guns are heard starting the barrage.
