Television program about the Canadian Forces Base at Cold Lake, Alberta. The narrator describes the Canadian commitment to NATO air defence. Shows CF100 taking off and Sabre jet. The base opened in 1954. Shows targets being towed by a T33 (Tudor) jet, as weapons practice unit for airborne assault for fighter squadrons mentioned. CF100 landing. Ground approach radar unit for instrument flying training. Squadron Leader [Christie] praises the CF100 and its safety record. He talks about the hangar facilities and maintenance section. He goes on to describe the base and its facilities. The "aero-med" unit. Flying Officer [Perth] describes the CF100 ejector seats and a pilot goes through the ejection drills. Also shows the decompression chamber to check the oxygen mask and simulating conditions at altitude of 45,000 feet. Arming rockets for the CF100. Explanation of how the rockets, when fired, break through the nose cone and remove the tail cover. Rocket range. Testing rockets at Primrose Lake. Flying in an Otter aircraft. Wing Commander Taylor is in charge of the training facility at Primrose Lake. Squadron Leader Fisher explains the instruments used to track moving targets. Explanation of air defence components: identification, interception and destruction. Group Commander [Stovelle], commanding officer of CFB Cold Lake is interviewed. Discusses the military and civilian population of approximately 4,000, including 1,200 to 1,300 children. He talks about the importance of entertainment and recreational facilities in order to maintain good morale.
