Interview of Mitchell Sharp about: his education; his work in the private sector after university training in economics; his joining the federal Department of Finance during the Second World War; the importance in that era of the advice public servants gave to cabinet ministers; his colleagues in the public service; Canada's role in rebuilding the economy of the postwar world; his joining the Department of Trade and Commerce; the Trans-Canada Pipeline and the role of Sharp and C.D. Howe in that project; the 1957 election; the impact of the goverment of John Diefenbaker on the structure of the federal public service; his resignation from the department; the relationship between public servants and politics; his work in the private sector from 1958 to 1963; the lack of encouragement in Canada for business people to go into politics; his decision to run for Parliament; his becoming a cabinet minister and his portfolios in Trade and Commerce and Finance; the importance of free trade to western Canada; the 1968 Liberal leadership race; his support for Pierre Elliott Trudeau; his respect for the abilities of Robert Stanfield; the working of the Trudeau cabinet and how Trudeau interacted with his cabinet ministers; his experiences as Minister of External Affairs; major foregn policy issues of that era such as the diplomatic recognition of Communist China and relations with Taiwan, Canada-United States relations and Canada's dealings with Europe; his role in helping to bring television coverage to the House of Commons proceedings; his work with the Tri-Lateral Commission, an organization set up to foster greater cooperation between North America, Europe and Japan; and his memories of the Rideau Club, located in Ottawa, Ontario, over the years.
