MS ("A") [in Maguire's handwriting], entitled "Notes pour accompagner la Pétition présentée à la Saintete Pie VIII. au nom du Seigr Evêque de Telmesse [Lartigue] Suffragant & du Seigr Evêque de Québec [Panet]", in six paragraphs. The dispute between the Montréal Sulpicians and Lartigue is discussed, and Roux's accusations are challenged. Reference is made to Chaboillez's M [of August 1823] against the bp. of Telmissus [see SOCG 359, C 121]; to the opposing view of Plessis and the late Sulpician [J.-B.-C.] Bédard's M [see SOCG 346]; to Roux's letter to Horton ("4") [?of 30 October 1827; see C 173]; to the [a]bp. of Québec [Panet] recent M and petition to the King [George IV, dated (27) December 1818; see SOCG 552]; to [former] PF [Pro-]Prefect [Della Somaglia's] letter [to Panet] of 14 October 1826 ("22bis").

The writers maintain that the Sulpicians are under the jurisdiction of the bp. of Québec, and cannot receive new members without the latter's permission; furthermore, all they do is to administer the Montréal parish, a petit séminaire, and a savage mission at some 30 miles from Montréal [Oka]. The malice of the British government is shown by the private instructions all governors receive [here quoted at length], where reference is made to the [Quebec] Act of [22 June] 1774.
