Cs of two letters, sent to the writer, and certified by him in Dublin on 9 February 1805. [1] The principal inhabitants of St. John's to Gower, Governor, St. John's, 9 August 1804. The writers support the request of [J.L.] O'Donel, chief Roman clergyman of Newfoundland for 20 years [from 1784], for a government pension. They mention O'Donel's crucial role, next to General Skerrett, in thwarting the revolt [led by the Society of United Irishmen] in the spring of 1799. In order to obtain the said pension, Skerrett has applied to Radstock [Waldegrave], Pole, Gambier, and the Duke of Kent [and Strathearn, Edward Augustus], but, for various reasons, the appropriate documents nevere reached Newfoundland. [2] Gower to the principal inhabitants of St. John's, Fort Townshend, 10 August 1804. The writer acknowledges the addressees' letter, and will duly support their petition. Postal stamp (Waterford).
