ALS. Observations derived from the writer's several visits to Canada, to be forwarded to Cappellari. The writer praises the Canadian clergy for its attachment to religion, for their external appearance (cassock is used even in travelling), and for the neatness of churches (with no parallel in Europe's villages and countryside), although the level of their instruction is low and they are too lazy ("lâches") for serious studies. However, Protestant sects are making progress, thanks to their entrepreneurship in business and the superior level of their ministers as preachers. The dispute over the way Roux and the Sulpicians dealt with the British Government has split the Canadian clergy. The attitudes of the former and the current [a]bp.s of Québec [Plessis and Panet] and of Lartigue, bp. of Telmissus (his family ties in the dispute are hinted to), are described.

The British government rejoices at this dispute amongst Catholics, yet it will not force Protestantism onto Canada lest the example of the United States is repeated. This letter is sent via Willcocks in New York. PF notes.
