ALS. The writer acknowledges two letters of the addressee, the first [of 5 August 1820] imposing upon all bp.s and priests to use Latin only in their correspondence with PF, the second [of 5 August 1820] urging them to counter Methodism and Bible societies [i.e., the British and Foreign Bible Society, founded 1804]. As for the first item, he will comply with PF's request, but apologizes for his poor Latin. As for the second item, he maintains that Bible societies are not active in his territory, and that both in Montréal and in the countryside he founded more Catholic schools than in the previous 40 years, although he has to fight the British regime and its concept of "liberal education".
